In the cultural year of 1999, the city of Coburg honored the famous composer Johann Strauss (1825-1899), who became a citizen of Coburg in 1887. The Hermann Teddy Bear Company paid homage to the 100th anniversary of the Waltz King's death.
The Johann Strauss bear is very special because he plays the most beautiful and famous waltz - The Blue Danube.
The Vienna born composer became immortal through his waltzes and operettas. Out of love and after the failure of his second marriage he became a Coburg citizen. For religious reasons it was not allowed in Vienna to obtain a divorce, so he moved to Coburg where it was permitted.
He converted to the Protestant religion on August 15, 1887, and then married his third wife, Adele, who was also from Vienna. The marriage was resisted by many. Strauss and Adele lived only a few weeks in Coburg. After their wedding they returned to Vienna. Nevertheless the society of Vienna was upset about the Coburg marriage. Johann Strauss never again received honors or awards for his work. Up until his death, he remained a Coburg citizen and is never mentioned by any Vienna historians.
